St Johnstone FC Show Racism and Bigotry the Red Card, February 14th 2012

Pupils from Ruthenvield and St John's Academy Primary Schools attended St Johnstone FC on Monday 13 February for a Show Racism the Red Card Event organised in partnership with St Johnstone FC and Perth and Kinross Council.

More about this event...

The event featured three educational workshops in the morning promoting messages of equality and respect. One of the workshops consisted of a fun and fitness coaching session with ex-porfessionals and Show Racism the Red Card coaches Derek Ferguson and Michael Weir, and the pupils were also treated to a stadium tour.

During the afternoon the Show Racism the Red Card anti-racism educational film was screened, which features some of the game’s greatest players; Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Didier Drogba.

Guests on the day included representatives from St Johnstone FC and Perth and Kinross Council, along with ex-professionals and Show Racism the Red Card coaches Derek Ferguson, Gary MacKay and Michael Weir. The guests spoke about their experiences of racism and sectarianism and offered advice on how to deal with, and combat, racism and sectarianism whenever it occurs.

Amanda Peebles, Show Racism the Red Card, said:

"The partnership working that Perth & Kinross Council is undertaking with St Johnstone FC and ourselves demonstrates a clear commitment to stamping out racism and sectarianism in the region. This kind of work equips young people well to deal with racist and sectarian attitudes and behaviours. Schools in the area are very keen to engage with the campaign and the young people we have worked with are very positive about it."
