Burnley FC host first all-day event with SRtRC for local school pupils

Show Racism the Red Card teamed up with Burnley FC and Burnley Community Sports Trust to organise a full day event for Year 5&6 pupils from three Burnley Primary Schools in Tuesday 16th March. This all day event, featuring workshops from SRtRC, Burnley Community Sports Trust and a Ground tour, was the first SRtRC held by the club and was very successful.
Over 120 young people from local schools were able to come along to Turf Moor to take part and enjoyed a great day. The carousel of workshops in the morning saw Leroy Rosenior run the SRtRC workshop, which dealt with issues including a definition of racism and terminology and several interactive activities. Burnley CST ran a workshop titled ‘Be the Boss’ which saw the young people work in groups to come up with imaginative ways to interest young people in coming to Burnley FC home games. The third workshop saw the groups take a tour of Turf Moor, seeing behind the scenes areas such as the trophy room, chairman’s room and changing rooms. Groups on the tour also bumped in to several members of the Burnley squad and manager, Brian Laws!
After lunch, the audience reassembled for a screening of the SRtRC DVD and a question and answer session on racism. The DVD was well received and the panel were greeted very enthusiastically by the audience. On the panel were Burnley FC players Andre Bikey and Chris McCann, as well as Leroy Rosenior and former Burnley FC player John Francis. This experienced panel dealt really well with some very good questions from the young people. Burnley FC had provided a top prize for the panel’s favourite question of the day a signed Burnley FC shirt and a signed ball. Runners-up were able to get their hands on some SRtRC kit bags with T-Shirts. The Q&A could have run for a lot longer than it did, so many of the audience were keen to ask questions.
This event received some excellent press coverage with photographers and reporters from the Burnley Express, Lancashire Telegraph and the club’s match-day programme there to capture the event. SRtRC were delighted to be at Burnley FC for this event and working with the Community Sports Trust at the club helped the days enormously. We are now looking forward to working with the Trust and the club again in the 2010/11 season on a similar format event.
